Open book
Candidates may bring a compliant soft-bound 2023 NEC. The NEC Handbook and loose-leaf or ring-bound editions are not allowed.
English and Spanish
Standard exams are available in English and Spanish. Other translations may be requested from PSI for an additional quoted fee.
Immediate score
The score appears after the exam. Unsuccessful candidates receive a diagnostic report by examination type.
Two scored portions
Since March 2025, Journeyman and Master exams are two separately scored portions: NEC Knowledge (56 items Journeyman / 70 Master) and Calculations (24 / 30). Residential exams remain a single test.

Overall process
1. Confirm the license path
Match your experience and supervision history to the correct TDLR license type.
2. Apply to TDLR
Submit the required application, fee, and experience verification.
3. Receive eligibility
TDLR determines exam eligibility; applicants generally have one year to satisfy licensing requirements.
4. Schedule with PSI
Create a PSI account, make sure the name exactly matches your ID, and select the correct exam and language.
5. Prepare the code book
Bring an allowed 2023 NEC, arrive early with valid ID, and follow current security and tabbing rules.
